Paddle School Overview

The Chota Canoe Club’s Annual Paddle School is a great way to get started paddling and to advance your skills as a touring or whitewater paddler!  This year’s school will take place on June 9-11, 2017 on the Hiwassee River, Ocoee River, and Parksville Lake.  Keep reading to find about about the classes offered.

Beginner Whitewater Kayak Class

The beginner whitewater kayak class will take place on the Hiwassee River (Class I-II) and we will cover basic boating and safety skills.  Beginner whitewater classes are suitable for both those who have never been in a whitewater kayak, and those who want to shake the winter cobwebs off in preparation for a summer of great kayaking.  The class will cover a review of the equipment and how to outfit your boat to fit you best.  Then the class will head to the lake for a review of how to safely wet-exit your boat, basic paddle strokes, and river safety.  At the instructors discretion, the class will then pack up and head to the river for some fun whitewater on the Hiwassee River.  Instructors will tailor the class to meet the skill levels and abilities of the students in the class.

Intermediate Whitewater Kayak Class

The intermediate whitewater kayak class will take place on the Ocoee River (Class III) and we will cover more advanced boating and skills.  Intermediate whitewater classes are suitable for paddlers who have a reliable combat roll, and solid class II+ river running experience.  The class will focus on river reading, advanced paddle strokes, group safety, and stepping up to the mighty Ocoee River.  Instructors will tailor the class to meet the skill levels and abilities of the students in the class.
